Di Crawford, born in Perth in 1949, is a Melbourne-based artist who has had numerous and very successful solo exhibitions
In her early work she refined a unique style of threadwork producing images of vibrant colour and quirkiness which continue to amaze all who see them. As she no longer works in this physically difficult medium, these threadwork pieces are becoming increasingly rare.
She now applies her extraordinary creative talents in acrylic paintings on canvas. her current work echoes a similar eclectic style with rich colour and vibrancy. Its inspiration is drawn mainly from her travels into the remote parts of Australia. The rugged terrain provides a wealth of material for Di’s favourite subjects- the extraordinary Australian outback landscapes and the native flora and fauna that inhabit our amazing land. her special interest is the extraordinary birdlife. Woven through these images is her enduring fascination for the symbolism and patterns of indigenous art. Her style has an etched, textured feel of great delicacy.
Di has always been conscious of her privileged life and tries to help those less fortunate wherever she can. Over many years di has donated some of the funds generated from her artwork sales to worthy causes: to an outdoor education facility, to Australia’s bushfire relief appeals and to victims of the 2004 tsunami. Helping others is very important to her and she will continue to make these donations in the future. |
